In the AI Ethics and Governance Lab, we aim to integrate our research on Explainable AI with research on ethics and public policy to enhance the development of human-centred and responsible AI practices. Please see AI Ethics and Governance Lab for more details.

Attention Brain and Cognition Lab

In the Attention Brain and Cognition (ABC) Lab, we aim to understand information processing mechanisms underlying learning and cognition in both humans and artificial intelligence systems through interdisciplinary approaches. We use a variety of methods and techniques from artificial intelligence, experimental psychology, psycholinguistics, and cognitive neuroscience, including computational modelling, psychophysics, eye tracking, EEG, and machine learning methods.

Research Topics

Our current research topics include (but not limited to):

• Explainable AI and artificial cognition
• Eye Movement analysis with Hidden Markov Models, EMHMM toolbox available!
• Deep Neural Network + Hidden Markov Model (DNN+HMM) for modeling eye movements in visual cognition
• Face and visual word recognition
• Eye movements in reading
• Object detection and identification

	Hsiao, Janet Professor Principal Investigator jhhsiao@ust.hk
	Haslett, David Research Assistant Professor haslett@ust.hk	I completed my PhD in the Language Processing Lab at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where my dissertation investigated how people represent the meanings of less familiar words. My current research applies those findings to large language models, and in particular, to the way that language models segment words into pieces, which has a substantial impact on how we should interpret those models.
	Liao, Anita PhD Student & Lab Manager u3007255@connect.hku.hk	I received Bachelor's degree at Smith College in the U.S. with double major in psychology and mathematics. I would like to explore more in psycholinguistics and cognitive psychology, and my current research interests focus on eye-movement patterns in reading.
	Zheng, Mercury PhD Student u3514160@connect.hku.hk	I completed Bachelar of Social Sciences (major in psychology) and MPhil (cognitive psychology) under Prof. Hsiao's supervision at HKU. I'm interested in perception and cognition in general. My current research topic is about multimodality integration in dynamic emotion perception and multimedia learning, and the role of eye movements in these processes.
	Teng, Xiaoru PhD Student u3306585@connect.hku.hk	I received Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences from the University of Hong Kong with double major in psychology and Chinese language and literature. I am interested in cognitive psychology. My current research interests focus on collaborative learning, mind wandering and joint attention.
	Qi, Ruoxi Jennifer PhD Student ruoxiqi@connect.hku.hk	I received the Bachelor of Social Sciences degree (major in Psychology, minors in Linguistics and Economics) from the University of Hong Kong. My current research focuses on using cognitive perspectives to examine AI behaviors and how human users understand AI, with implications for the development of explainable AI. I am also interested in psycholinguistics.
	Yang, Yumeng Alice MPhil Student yumeng@g.ucla.edu	I received Bachelor's degree at UCLA with a major in psychology. I would like to explore cognitive psychology more, and my research interests are eye movement patterns in object detection, visual search strategies, and cognitive impairment.
	Jinhan Zhang Fulltime RA jinhanz@hku.hk	I received my Bachelor's in Computer Science and Neuroscience from Johns Hopkins University. My current research draws insights from cognitive science to probe AI model mechanisms, aiming to provide more user-centric explanations of AI behaviors. I'm also interested in applying psycholinguistics and concept learning to build more efficient AI.
